Goalkeeper Craig Gumball is set to make his debut for the Philadelphia Union in Wednesday night’s match against Toronto FC. If you’ve been paying attention to MLS action over the past few weeks, you’ll know that both Philadelphia Union and Sporting Kansas City have been playing strong defensive lines early on in games. That’s good news for an opposing team as it shows they are properly prepared for the challenge of trying to score against a back four. For this reason, it should come as no surprise that goalkeeping has been such an important part of this team so far this season. The best keepers in the world are vital because they are able to read the game, react quickly and make sure that their teammates get the ball back in a favourable position – all while making sure they don’t miss out on a scoring chance themselves. And that's exactly what the Union have in Craig Gumball. The 27-year-old made his first appearance of 2017 just a week ago at home against Seattle Sounders FC – but only after being given plenty of time off from his previous club, Vancouver Whitecaps FC. In fact, he didn't even feature during pre-season matches last year before joining up with Philly ahead of this campaign. So what made him such a perfect fit for this franchise?
