How To Play: Oregon Trail

About Oregon Trail

The Oregon Trail is a classic educational game that was first released in 1974. The game simulates the journey of a wagon train traveling from Independence, Missouri to Oregon City, Oregon in the mid-19th century. Players must make decisions about food rationing, hunting, trading, and fording rivers to keep their party alive. The game ends when the party reaches Oregon or when all members of the party have died.

Gameplay

The Oregon Trail is a text-based game that is played using the arrow keys and the space bar. Players begin by choosing a persona, which will determine the difficulty level of the game and the points that are awarded at the end of the game. Players must then ration food, hunt, trade, and ford rivers as they travel along the Oregon Trail.

Functions

  • Rationing food: Players must decide how much food to give to each member of their party each day. If players do not ration food properly, their party members will starve to death.
  • Hunting: Players can hunt for food to supplement their rations. Hunting is dangerous, however, and players risk being injured or killed by wild animals.
  • Trading: Players can trade food and supplies with other wagon trains. Trading can be a good way to get food that is scarce in the player's party's inventory.
  • Fording rivers: Players must ford rivers to continue their journey along the Oregon Trail. Fording rivers is dangerous, however, and players risk drowning their party members if they do not ford the rivers properly.

The Oregon Trail is a challenging game, but it is also a rewarding one. Players can learn a lot about the difficult life of pioneers in the 19th century by playing the game.
